    Hi All.

I thought I would drop a line in relation to my BOSE Lifestyle 50 and successful restoration of functions following the set up of the serial connection to the Tunerone ( M1 Multi-Room Interface). It differs a little from the instructions and may be useful to advise others.

I am using the Global Cache IP2SL GC100 adapter.

The Startech RS232 to TTL Serial Converter – DB9, F/M Product ID: IC232TTL has been discontinued. I managed to source an alternative as follows from http://www.SerialComm.com: RS232 to 5V TTL Converter (Model: TTL-232-5P) or direct link:

    https://www.serialcomm.com/serial_rs232_converters/rs232_rs485_to_ttl_converters/rs232_to_5v_ttl_converter/rs232_to_5v_ttl.product_general_info.aspx

For the connecter and cable I used these from Amazon: Sourcing map D-sub DB9 Breakout Board Connector with Case 9 Pin 2 Row Female RS232 Serial Port Solderless Terminal Block Adapter with Thumb Screws or direct:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07MCV662G?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

and the cable: Wnwill 3.5mm Male Plug to Bare Wire or direct link:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08SK5NPMF?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

For wiring, after a bit of trial and error despite wiring instructions with all the items procured turns out the ground or earth was causing a lack of comms. Disconnected this leaving just the Tx and Rx connections alone and data flowed. For the items I used the cable tip (red) is connected to pin 2 and the middle (white) is connected to pin 3. I think anyway – could be the other way around but a very simple swap over if required (leaving well alone now things are working again). As noted, ground or earth not connected at all.

The bonus once things were working again and several zones set up, the Personal Music Centres (PMC) sprung back to life (have two and both with backlights still fully functional – lucky me). They didn’t even need reconnecting to the M1 – just worked first time. Very pleased with this as it was due to a lack of connection to the M1 that I explored the serial connection.

So there you have it. Thank you for the instructions and of course the MrURremote app Danny and team. You have saved another Lifestyle 50 system that will now extend beyond its current c20+ year lifespan.

      Dear Justin,

I wanted to extend my heartfelt gratitude for sharing your detailed experience with the Bose Lifestyle 50 solution and the successful restoration of its functions. Your insights and alternative setup instructions will undoubtedly prove invaluable to others navigating similar challenges.

It’s truly inspiring to hear how you creatively sourced alternative components and troubleshooted the wiring to ensure seamless communication. Your perseverance in overcoming obstacles like the grounding issue exemplifies dedication and resourcefulness.

Moreover, your revelation about the Personal Music Centres (PMC) spontaneously springing back to life is remarkable and serves as a testament to the robustness of the system. It’s wonderful to know that your efforts have not only revived your Lifestyle 50 but also extended its lifespan significantly.

On behalf of the entire team behind the MyURemote app and the community, thank you for your invaluable contribution. Your feedback not only enriches our understanding but also helps fellow users in preserving and enhancing their systems.

      Warm regards,

      Danny

      hi Denis,

I’m affraid it is not possible to control Bose lifestyle 8 with any remote control app as Bose lifestyle 8 does only support RF control and has no RS232 or network connection.
Note that Bose lifestyle 8 is sold from 1998 – 2000.

      Regards, Danny Verdegem

    Hi Danny
MyURemote is now working with my Bose LS50 over my iPhone. I wanted to say a huge thanks for all your patience and customer service over the past few weeks. You have been tremendous.

And to help others wanting to use MyURemote with their Bose LS50 here are some of my learnings

    1. The serial cable from the Global Cache 100 to the Bose M1 (multi-room interface) is indeed custom and you will need to build this cable
    2. The 2 connectors (3.5mm audio and female serial) need to be wired correctly.
    a) the 3.5mm connector accommodates 3 wires and is labelled L (left), R (right) and a mic symbol.
    b) on the female serial cable you only need to focus on ports 1, 2 and 5
    c) the correct wiring of the 3.5mm audio connector to the female serial cable is
    i. L to port 1
    ii. R to port 2
    iii. MIC to port 5
    3. I found it best to use a LAN cable to make these 3 connections. A LAN cables’ wires are stronger than conventional serial cables
    4. When you connect this custom cable to the Global Cache and the Bose M1 REMEMBER to power down both those units 1st

    I hope this helps

Now I’m off to learn MyURemote and take advantage of all of its’ features

    Thanks Danny!!!
