How to use MyURemote for Bose lifestyle 40 and lifestyle 50 (M1 Multi-room interface)?

This doc describes how to replace your P1 (personal music center remote control for LS40 and 50) by MyURemote.

This doc is for the lifestyle 40 and lifestyle 50. For more recent lifestyle systems (2003 – now) click here.

Lifestyle System 50

What do you need? (total cost about 160$)

RS232-TTL

  • Specialists: Here you find more info about the Serial Data interface.
  • RS232 connector to mini jack connector (click image to enlarge). This is not a standard cable, build your own using the separate 3.5mm and serial connectors:

ttltominijackConnect pin 5 with the shield of whatever cable you use, and connect it with the sleeve of the mini-jack.

  • Bose Lifestyle 40/50 (M1 Multi-Room interface)

How does it work?

  • When tapping a command button (for instance “Vol+”), the command is sent via you WiFi and router to your controller.
  • The controller (fi Global Cache GC100) addresses the Bose Lifestyle via the RS232/TTL decoder to its serial port.

      hi Denis,

I’m affraid it is not possible to control Bose lifestyle 8 with any remote control app as Bose lifestyle 8 does only support RF control and has no RS232 or network connection.
Note that Bose lifestyle 8 is sold from 1998 – 2000.

    Hi Danny
MyURemote is now working with my Bose LS50 over my iPhone. I wanted to say a huge thanks for all your patience and customer service over the past few weeks. You have been tremendous.

And to help others wanting to use MyURemote with their Bose LS50 here are some of my learnings

    1. The serial cable from the Global Cache 100 to the Bose M1 (multi-room interface) is indeed custom and you will need to build this cable
    2. The 2 connectors (3.5mm audio and female serial) need to be wired correctly.
    a) the 3.5mm connector accommodates 3 wires and is labelled L (left), R (right) and a mic symbol.
    b) on the female serial cable you only need to focus on ports 1, 2 and 5
    c) the correct wiring of the 3.5mm audio connector to the female serial cable is
    i. L to port 1
    ii. R to port 2
    iii. MIC to port 5
    3. I found it best to use a LAN cable to make these 3 connections. A LAN cables’ wires are stronger than conventional serial cables
    4. When you connect this custom cable to the Global Cache and the Bose M1 REMEMBER to power down both those units 1st

    I hope this helps

Now I’m off to learn MyURemote and take advantage of all of its’ features

    Thanks Danny!!!
